Top Ten Herbs for Athletes

Athletes of just about every sort place greater energy and endurance at the top of their “wish list” and are attracted to products that offer more of these precious commodities. When used wisely, herbal remedies are safe and effective for many sports-related uses. Some of the most common sports herbs are as follows:


Eleuthero—helps the body normalize all its functions and adapt to stress; increases the oxygenation of the cells and tissue of the body; has a positive influence on endurance; helps the cells deal with lactic acid and other by-products of metabolism (the sore muscles from a heavy workout result from lactic acid buildup)


Fo-ti—known as an adaptogenic and longevity herb; used to replenish the blood and counteract general weakness; benefits the cardiovascular system


Ginseng (red processed Korean or Chinese) is often recommended to help increase energy levels. Ginseng appears to improve both physical and mental performance under conditions of stress. Clinical trials have shown the following benefits for athletes taking ginseng:

Dang gui is perhaps the most widely-used herb in the world and is extremely popular in China. Its benefits include the following:

Nettles are rich in chlorophyll and nutrients and are renowned as a nutritive tonic. The advantages of taking nettles are as follows:

*Highly nutritious
*Complete protein
*Builds the blood
*Prevents or counteracts fatigue


Dandelion root is widely-used as a gentle, cleansing tonic. Its ability to detoxify and cool the liver help athletes recover more quickly after workouts.


Dipsacus is a Chinese herb known to stimulate metabolism. As it strengthens ligaments and bones, this herb is of particular benefit to athletes. In Chinese medicine it is considered a liver and kidney tonic and is used for soreness in the lower back and knees.


Muira puama is an herb from South America that has been used traditionally as a male stimulant. It is said to increase sexual energy.


Cayenne primarily benefits the circulatory system, improving the supply of blood and the removal of toxins. It is invigorating and warming and beneficial to the circulation. It is stimulating to the entire body and promotes perspiration.
