This energetic therapy employs a laying-on-of-hands technique, with certain Eastern-inspired theories of energy flow. It was developed by Dolores Krieger, an R.N. and nursing professor at New York University in the early 1970s. Krieger was inspired by research showing the effectiveness of psychic healing. Therapeutic touch has been used successfully by hospital nurses to treat illness, promote relaxation and ease anxiety. It is taught in more than 80 universities and 30 countries. Therapeutic touch is most commonly taught to and used by nurses. However, some massage therapists study therapeutic touch and incorporate it into their work.
