The main tenant of homeopathy is "like cures like" or the "Law of Similars" as observed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the 19th century. Homeopathy uses a minute dose of the substance causing an illness to cure the same illness. It’s still not clear exactly how homeopathy works, but the theory is that "remedies," including herbs and plants, minerals or other substances, stimulate a person’s immune and defense systems and help the body heal itself. Remedies are usually prescribed one at a time and may change as symptoms clear. Homeopathy is used to treat short-term illnesses such as those common to infants and children, as well as chronic ailments such as arthritis and asthma.
Now a major part of naturopathic medicine, homeopathy has held legal status in the U.S. since 1939. Approximately half the homeopaths in the U.S. are physicians, with the rest mostly dentists, naturopaths, chiropractors and veterinarians.
