Aromatherapy
As published in Nexus - Colorado's Holistic Journal

For ancient Egyptians, the use of aromatic plants was a way of life, but the term "aromatherapy" was not coined until 1928 by French chemist Rene Gattefossé. Essential oils are used therapeutically to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety, as well as to enhance health and appearance. Aromas are contained in concentrated liquids distilled from such things as plants, roots, flowers, branches, bark and leaves. They can be inhaled, massaged into the skin in diluted form, or placed in a bath. Also effective in relieving headaches, muscular and rheumatic pains, digestive disorders, skin conditions and women’s problems such as PMS.
Training, certification and licensing are still evolving in the U.S. and not standardized as they are in Great Britain. There are, however, many schools and individuals who offer aromatherapy training. Most have trained in some other form of therapy such as massage or chiropractic.
