Developed in Germany in the early 1930s, this therapy is used to treat atherosclerosis or "hardening of the arteries." A chemical called EDTA is injected into the bloodstream on the theory that chelation dissolves the calcium content of plaque from the artery walls. Another theory suggests that EDTA works as an antioxidant. This is one alternative to coronary bypass surgery. The treatment can only be carried out by a conventional medical doctor. Physicians are divided over the safety of chelation therapy.
