A comprehensive medical system, osteopathy is based on the belief that any upset of the structural framework can manifest itself as illness in a variety of forms. While certain physical manipulation techniques are ancient, this therapy is attributed to Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917). He believed that tension in the muscles and misaligned bones, whether caused by injury, stress or destructive emotions, inhibit the body from optimum health. In addition to osteopathic manipulative treatments, care from an osteopath includes a holistic approach to preventive medicine, diagnosis, surgery, prescription medications, and hospital referrals. Training is equivalent to that required for MDs.
Cranial Osteopathy uses special techniques to resolve compression or distortion in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism (the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum, and interconnected membranes). A practitioner makes corrections and readjustments through a light touch or hands-on physical treatment. It is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches and a range of other conditions.
