Charlotte's story:
Charlotte is a 51-year-old travel agent who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She is under the care of her primary physician who is planning to perform a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy.
Charlotte wants to follow her doctor's protocol but she also wants to support the conventional cancer treatment with herbs, vitamins, dietary changes, visualizations, and acupuncture treatments. From her research, she feels this approach will give her the best chance of getting well. Also, the complimentary therapies will help her cope with the devastating effects of surgery and chemotherapy. Here is her story:
Charlotte:
I was in shock for days after the diagnosis. I never believed that I would get cancer. I've always eaten well, exercised, taken care of myself. But I guess there are things in life we can't control. Now I want to do the best I can to control my healing. My surgery is scheduled for next week with chemotherapy to start soon after. I've read a couple of books already on natural approaches to treating breast cancer so I have a general idea of what can help me. I just need some guidance.
Therapist advice:
As you mentioned there are a number of books that outline herb and supplement plans for healing cancer. These include Natural Medicine for Breast Cancer by Ron Falcone; Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer by Nan Lu, Ellen Schaplowsky; Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way by Susun Weed, Christianne Northrup.
I would like to help you with a daily meditation/visualization technique. Here's what I suggest: Each day sit for 20 minutes and visualize yourself whole and healthy. See your body completely radiant and well. Use a ray of light to burn out any darkness or cancer cells that you see.
When you do this meditation before surgery, imagine the surgeon as your white knight who will go inside of you with a laser sword and clean out all cancer cells. Picture yourself recovering from this surgery easily and without complications.
After surgery, picture the wound healing completely and without complications. Use the ray of light to heal any dark or weak areas that you see in your visualization.
When you begin chemo, while you are receiving it, visualize a magic brew filling your body with light and eliminating any darkness or cancer. Picture your body receiving this without any side-effects - just being in harmony with the treatment.
If you become nauseous, imagine that you are releasing the toxins and cancer that need to get out of your body. Later, meditate and fill your body with light and wellness.
Get-Healthy Plan:
Before surgery, a good multi-mineral and vitamin supplement is helpful - along with several grams of vitamin C each day. However check with your physician to be sure this is okay. The herb ginger can help reduce the nausea caused by anesthesia. Again, a holistic physician can help you with this.
After surgery, the vitamins A, C, and E can help speed recovery and reduce risk of infection. Again, ginger can help reduce nausea. There are several herbs that help increase wound healing as well. Your holistic physician can guide you with the use of these herbs. You'll also find them listed in the books I mentioned.
The herbs ginseng and ginger can help you get through chemotherapy treatments with the least amount of side-effects. Your holistic physician can give you dosages based on your weight, dietary habits etc.
A good nutrition plan can ease chemotherapy recovery. You'll need plenty of low-fat protein (such as salmon), and you'll need to re-build your immune system. Eliminate sugar as much as you can, because it increases your risk of illness and infection.
Large amounts of fresh vegetables and fruits are essential for your recovery from cancer. I suggest freshly made vegetable juices each day (including wheat grass juice). There are several books on vegetable juices for cancer treatment. Investing in a good juicer is well worth the money. There may be some days when all you can tolerate is a glass of fresh juice.
Many people suggest a diet of all raw foods to recover from cancer. Your holistic physician can help you with this. If you can stick to a raw foods diet during this time, it may help you recover rapidly.
There are other herbs specifically used to heal cancer. I suggest you work closely with a holistic physician when taking these, as they may be very potent and have some side-effects.
Your mental and emotional states are very important during healing. Read inspirational books and watch inspirational movies about courageous people. Don't spend time with people who bring your energy down. Be very protective of yourself now and carefully choose the company you keep.

Janet's Personal Journal:
Today I spent 20 minutes visualizing the surgeon using a laser sword to eliminate the cancer in my body. It was a powerful visualization. I'm feeling a bit calmer about the surgery. I've spoken to a Holistic physician who has put me on a list of supplements to strengthen me before surgery. Taking these steps feels good and like I'm bringing positive energy into this experience. Thanks for the guidance.
